Hair Tips for all hair types!

#1: When washing your hair, focus shampoo on the scalp and conditioner on the strands (esp. the tips). Your scalp is where the dirt, sweat & oils are concentrated, so this is the area that primarily needs shampooing! The shampoo will also run down the length of the strand as you’re washing & rinsing, so it will all get clean. Conditioner should be concentrated on the tips of the hair to strengthen and protect the strands. Hair is not alive, so it is not producing its own protective oil along the strand.

#2: Use products tailored to your hair type. As we briefly mentioned last week, there are 4 main hair types – straight, wavy, curly, and coiled/kinky. While all types may benefit from many of the same ingredients, each hair type has its own strengths & weaknesses. To best protect and care for your hair, use products that focus on your hair’s needs.

#3: Avoid using hot water when washing your hair. Hot water can dry out & weaken the hair. Aim for warm or lukewarm water instead.

#4: Gently squeeze water out of your hair with your towel or let hair air dry instead of rubbing it in order to reduce damage.

#5: Be gentle with wet hair. Hair is more prone to breakage when it is wet, so we recommend that you let hair dry a bit first (until damp, not wet) and then use a wide toothed comb to gently comb hair.

#6: Avoid wearing tight hair styles such as tight ponytails, buns, cornrows, etc. If you do, try to change where you put the ponytail/bun and always use a hair band that is made for this purpose (vs. an ordinary rubber band). For cornrows, braids & extensions, give your hair a break from these hairstyles every few months.
