Applying cold to the areas affected with eczema, helps to calm the inflammation and reduce discomfort. Try these methods next time you're eczema is particularly bothersome:

#1: Take a cool shower. A hot shower may provide temporary relief because the heat gives the effect of scratching, but a hot shower can acutally stimulate the inflammation. That means more itching and more discomfort when you get out. Instead, take a shower or bath with the coolest temperature that is comfortable. Cool water helps to calm the inflmmation.

#2: Stash cortisone creams in the fridge.  The chilled cream gives a one-two punch by providing a dose of calming medication along with the soothing benefits of applying it cold.

#3: Apply ice packs. As mentioned above, cool temperatures calm the inflammation and should reduce itching. Apply ice packs to affected areas for some immediate relief. Be sure to wrap a towel around your choice of ice pack (a bag of frozen peas works great!).
