Did you know that the last new sunscreen ingredient approved by the FDA was in 1999?
Around the world, new ingredients that are proven effective & safe have been approved over the past 16 years that have been pending approval here in the US. Last November, the Sunscreen Innovation Act was signed into law here in the US.
I won’t get into all of the details, but overall, what does this mean for you? New (and potentially better) products will become available over the next few years. Under the new law, the FDA has time limits on how long it can keep an ingredient on the shelf; the agency must respond to approval requests within 18 months. 1 in 5 Americans gets skin cancer in their lifetime, so any advancement that increases usage or effectiveness is certainly welcome!
