Hydroquinone

Hydroquinone is the most effective ingredient when it comes to lightening skin. It reduces the production of melanin (skin pigment) in the skin, which leads to lightening of the skin. It is usually present in US products that target dark spots, melasma, and other discoloration.

 

Kojic Acid

Kojic Acid is often used in combination with hydroquinone to supercharge its effects. Naturally found in mushrooms and soy, this acid is also a skin-lightening ingredient that inhibits the production of melanin in the skin.

 

Glycolic Acid

As an exfoliating ingredient, glycolic acid helps revive skin by clearing away the old, dead outer layers of skin to reveal the younger, fresher, brighter skin beneath. Naturally occurring in sugar cane, this acid “unglues” the layers of dead skin so that they come off gently. It is available in a variety of skin care products from cleansers to moisturizers, but also in professional chemical peels for a stronger & faster effect (but still usually without a lot of major stay-at-home peeling)

 

Ascorbic Acid

In addition to being a powerful antioxidant, ascorbic acid (commonly known as Vitamin C) is a natural bleaching agent. You may have heard of people using lemons on their skin to lighten & brighten skin (not recommended because many people experience irritation doing this), and that’s why! Ascorbic acid also acts as an exfoliant and is commonly present in products with an AHA (alpha hydroxyl acid) to boost effectiveness.

 

With all of these ingredients, it is especially recommended to use sunscreen and avoid too much sun exposure because they can make skin more sensitive to sunlight, leading to darkening of the skin at worst or at best, fighting against all of your skin-tone correcting efforts.
