We’re in Orange County; who doesn’t love going to the beach or the pool? With our great weather, we can go year-round, but in the summer, the kids are out of school so we all tend to spend more time there! In this blog post, I just want to give you a few things to look out for at the beach, on the ocean, and at the pool to keep your skin healthy!

Sun Protection

I promised in an earlier blog post that  I wouldn’t go to deeply into this, but just to remind you—the ocean reflects the sun’s rays back, so be sure to put sunscreen under your chin & to wear your sunglasses (special sunglasses are available for surfing & other water sports).

Athlete’s Foot

Athlete’s Foot is a fungal infection of the foot that can spread from one person to another. This fungus thrives in wet places, so when you are at a public place such as a pool, remember to wear your flip-flops when walking around the pool area. Chlorine Problems

As you know, most pools use chlorine to keep the pool clean from a variety of bacteria & fungi and other such things. Chlorine may, however, have some undesirable affects on your skin & hair. For some people, chlorine irritates the skin and results in a rash (irritant contact dermatitis, which we briefly touched on in a post last week). To help reduce this, I recommend:

* Rinsing off as soon as you are out of the pool for the day. Many pools and water parks have showers for rinsing off on-property.

*Once you get back to your house or your hotel room, take your shower first thing with a mild cleanser

*After your shower: moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! I typically recommend either the Aveeno Moisturizing Lotion (contains oatmeal which is good for sensitive & itchy skin) or a thicker cream (esp. if you know that you are prone to dry itchy skin & rashes either form chlorine or just in general)

If you are swimming in the water for a while, the chlorine may also be affecting your hair. Some people complain that their hair looks “hay-like” after being in chlorine for an extended period of time. What can you do to help alleviate these issues?

*Wet your hair prior to getting in the pool. Hair is kind of sponge-like, absorbing whatever liquid, so if you wet it with regular water, it will slow the absorption of the chlorine 

*Use specialized hair products. There are products (typically oil or silicone based) that you can apply to your hair before swimming to protect it, as well as shampoos & conditioners that are specifically for repairing hair from chlorine damage.
