This month, our blog series is called Love, Your Skin and will focus on different ways to show your skin some love, from head to toe!

One way to show your skin some love is to be gentle! This tip seems like an obvious one as most people do not intend to be rough with their skin, but we can sometimes be more aggressive than we realize. People try to do the right things for their skin, cleansing and exfoliating and applying serums and creams, but are sometimes doing them a bit too vigorously. Keep these tips in mind in order to show a little tenderness to your skin:

*Do not attack acne with harsh scrubs and rough exfoliators. People with acne sometimes seem to go to war with acne by aggressively scrubbing the skin. The thought is that if I can only get my pores super clean and exfoliated, the acne will clear up. Unfortunately, this back-fires because the skin becomes further inflamed, potentially making that area redder and causing more breakouts. Also, harsh physical exfoliators (cleansers with granules, in particular), can create micro-scratches in the skin that may cause the acne bacteria to spread to other areas of the face! If you have acne, treat skin gently by using gentler exfoliators (such as salicylic acid). When cleansing, do not scrub your face harshly, but rather continue rubbing in cleanser in small circles or use a sonic cleansing brush with an acne or sensitive skin brush head.

*Do not rub in cleanser or other products too vigorously. Sometimes people will apply the same cleansing and drying tactics used with dishes in the kitchen sink at the bathroom sink as well. Your skin is much more sensitive and delicate than a bowl! When we are young, our skin bears this type of aggressive treatment relatively well because we still have high amounts of elastin, collagen and cell renewal rates. As we age, however, skin is not so quick to bounce back and rough treatment can begin to show as fine lines, wrinkles, and droopiness. When applying a product –be it cleanser, serum, moisturizer or whatever, try to use light, gentle motions that do not tug or pull at skin.

*Pat dry. This principle is similar to the point above – do not rub or wipe vigorously. It is best to pat your skin dry, and not just your facial skin! The skin on your arms and legs is still skin, and should still be tended to gently. Patting the skin dry not only prevents too much pulling and tugging on the skin, but also helps skin to retain more moisture from the shower/cleansing.
