LASER HAIR REMOVAL

In the past, men and women have subjected themselves to painful, less effective methods of hair removal. Today, laser hair removal is a more viable and practical alternative to shaving, waxing and plucking, offering the ability to treat a variety of body areas quickly and efficiently. We are proud to offer the best in laser hair removal technology with LightSheer® DUET™, the gold standard in the industry for permanent laser hair reduction. It uses new technology to deliver treatments more quickly and with less pain! Additionally, previous lasers could only be used on those with light or medium skin tones, but the LightSheer® DUET™ can be used on many more people, including those with olive or dark skin tones. Laser Hair Removal is most effective when the treated hair is brown or black. Even with the newest technologies, laser hair removal is not as effective on blond, red, grey or white hair.

Laser hair removal is occasionally offered in informal non-medical settings, such as shopping malls, spas and walk-in clinics, which may even be staffed with adequately trained personnel. However, these are not as reliable as procedures performed in a medical setting, such as our office. It is important to choose an experienced health care provider with the proper training and medical background. At Beverly Dermatology & Laser Center in Orange County, all of our laser technicians have extensive training on the LightSheer® DUET™ and perform treatments under the proper supervision of Dr. Beverly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does laser hair removal work?

During laser hair removal, a targeted beam of highly concentrated laser light is generated and focused onto the skin. The light emitted is absorbed by the brownish pigment (melanin) located in the hair follicles. To achieve this, the laser generates pulses of light, each for a fraction of a second, allowing the hair to absorb just the right amount of light energy to heat in a controlled manner. This causes damage and destruction to the hair follicles in the active hair growth cycle, significantly reducing and/or stopping the hair's ability to regrow.

Will I need more than one treatment?

Because hair grows in phases and the hair follicle is most sensitive to the laser in its growth phase, a series of treatments is necessary for permanent hair reduction. The number of treatments necessary is specific to the individual's hair growth rate and skin/hair type. We advise patients to plan on 6 to 8 treatments, but those with light skin and dark hair tend to need the fewest treatments (as few as 2 or 3, in some cases). Patients with the darkest skin may need more than 8 sessions because the laser intensity has to be sufficiently low to target only the hair's melanin and not the skin's melanin. Additionally, some patients choose to have enough treatments to reduce the hair growth dramatically, but not eliminate it completely. At your laser consultation, we advise you on the number of treatments you'll need to acheive the level of reduction you desire. Generally treatment sessions are spaced 4-6 weeks apart.

Will it hurt? What should I expect immediately following the treatment session?

Some patients with sensitive skin request the use of a topical  anesthetic, however most patients report minimal to no discomfort during the laser hair removal treatment. Patients that experience a small degree of discomfort say that it is less painful than waxing. Following a laser hair removal session, some patients experience temporary redness or bumps. This usually resolves quickly, but may last from several hours to several days.

How do I prepare for a laser treatment session?

The treated area must be shaved close to the skin immediately prior to treatment—this is best done at home. We can assist in shaving hard-to-reach areas in the office. Three weeks prior to treatment, patients are asked to stop tweezing and discontinue the use of hair removal products, such as gels or waxes.
