SCLEROTHERAPY

Sclerotherapy is a treatment used to reduce or eliminate the appearance of varicose and spider veins.

What are varicose and spider veins?

When blood does not circulate through certain veins properly or quickly enough, it can start to pool. When this happens in the superficial layers of the skin, the veins can become distracting and call unwanted attention to the area. Varicose veins are large and bulge out from under the skin. Spider veins are thinner, smaller veins that can't be felt and resemble starburst-like clusters or fine-lined mazes. These veins typically appear on the legs but can emerge anywhere on the body.

There are many causes of unsightly veins, including hereditary traits, pregnancy or prolonged time on your feet. We choose from multiple sclerosing agents dependent on the severity, size and location of your unwanted veins.

What is sclerotherapy?

For nearly 150 years, schlerotherapy has been one of the oldest effective treatments for spider and varicose veins. In this simple procedure, a very fine needle is used to inject a small amount of sclerosing solution directly into the affected veins. The solution causes a focal segment in the walls of the vein to stick together and dissolve, eventually fading away.

What areas can it treat?

At our office, we only perform sclerotherapy on the legs.

What is the procedure like? Does it hurt?

The procedure is minimally painful since we use the smallest needles to inject the veins. A typical session lasts about 30 minutes. This will vary depending on the number of vessels needing treatment.

Are the results permanent?

Typically, veins that are eliminated will not return. Approximately 50% of injected veins are eliminated or reduced with each injection session.  Multiple treatments (usually 2-4) are needed, typically spaced 4-6 weeks apart, to obtain optimal results.

What are the side effects? Is there any downtime?

Side effects of sclerotherapy are usually temporary, and may include bruising, redness or mild inflammation at the injection site. These symptoms usually go away within a few days.

After the treatment, you must avoid strenuous exercise for 2 days, however walking is highly encouraged.  Sun avoidance is integral in preventing pigmentation in the treated areas and will be discussed during your consultation.

For safety reasons, sclerotherapy cannot be performed on women who are pregnant or nursing.
